Council approves body cameras for Claxton PD

Claxton Police Chief Edward Olgesbee went before council on Monday night to request approval for a $2,800 line item for new body cameras for police officers in the City of Claxton.

Chief Olgesbee explained that given the current climate around policing, it would be a great addition to the department for the officers and the public. He also noted there was recently an incident where the cameras would have come in handy.

Oglesbee noted that public safety grants were available through the Georgia Municipal Association, but the approval could take months and the required training following the approval would add additional time. He explained that he still plans to apply for the grants, but requested council assist with the costs on the front end. The line item was not originally in the police department budget.

At the cost of $400 per camera, Oglesbee said the $2,800 would provide for 7 cameras for the department.

The council unanimously approved the decision.
