The Joy of the Journey: Starting Over

The Joy of the Journey

Starting Over

Life is full of unpredictable twists and turns that can lead us into difficult situations and overwhelming challenges. Whether it’s a failed relationship, a job loss, a personal setback, or the passing of a loved one, we all encounter moments when we feel as though we have fallen short or lost our way. These types of events can prompt us to reach out to God when we haven’t done so in a long time.  However, many people struggle to reach out to God because they feel guilty about doing so, and they think to themselves, “Why did I wait till the crisis to ask for his help?” I should have been reaching out to him before trouble came.  In these trying times, it’s essential to remember that God delights in giving us opportunities to start over. The Bible is rich with stories of redemption, illustrating how individuals have been granted fresh starts, which serves as a reminder of God’s enduring love and mercy.

One of the most encouraging scriptures that captures this truth is found in Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Each day, we are greeted with new mercies that provide fresh starts, regardless of yesterday’s mistakes. God does not define us by our past; instead, He invites us to embrace His love and look forward to new opportunities.

The first step in starting over is recognizing the need for change. The Apostle Paul encapsulates this in Philippians 3:13-14:  Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” This passage emphasizes the importance of letting go of the past and pursuing a new direction. Acknowledging our need for a fresh start can be daunting, but it is often the first step toward healing and growth.

Throughout Scripture, we see countless examples of individuals who received second chances. Consider the story of Jonah. When God called him to go to Nineveh, Jonah initially ran away. However, God, in His grace, provided him another opportunity to fulfill His purpose. Jonah 3:1-2 states, “Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.’” Despite Jonah’s initial disobedience, God was ready to use him again, illustrating that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace.

Starting over often means embracing God’s unmerited favor (GRACE). In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul writes, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Accepting Christ’s sacrifice allows us to become new creations. This transformation is not just superficial; it signifies deep spiritual renewal, urging us to let go of past identities rooted in failure and allow God to shape our futures.

In conclusion, let us cling to the truth that God is always ready to offer us a new start. No matter where we find ourselves, be it in failure, regret, or hopelessness, His steadfast love remains. Each morning brings the chance to experience His mercies. By trusting in Him and taking that brave step forward, we embrace fresh starts that He generously provides. With God, there is always the promise of new beginnings, and His love assures us that we are never beyond hope.
