I have read a lot of books on parenting over my 21 years of being a mom. From books about caring for a newborn, caring for a toddler, and raising teenagers. However, I realized that there aren’t many books about “letting go” and helping our children leave our nest. I believe there aren’t many books on this topic because it is hard to put into words the feeling of letting our babies go out into this scary world and figure out how to navigate through the good, bad, and ugly days of life.
We go from being the mom who kisses away their boo boos and puts bandaids to ease their pain, to the mom who releases them into a world of unknown and endless possibilities. While releasing our children, we learn to let them fall so that they can figure out how to rise with us loving and guiding from afar.
As I have let two of my birds leave the nest, I have learned some important lessons as a mom. First, I have learned that my children are a gift from God, a heritage only from Him.
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3
Therefore, I must give them back to the Lord, trusting and knowing that He loves them more than I could ever imagine. Our good, good Father goes with them every step of the way.
Second, I have learned that they do still need me. It may not be in the same way as when I kissed their boo boos away, but they need me in a much deeper way.
My children need me to pray over them and for them. They need me to be ready to listen to a phone call about their lives and give advice out of love. Most importantly, they need me to let go so they can let God use them and live through them to make them who He wants them to be.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13
So mamas, Let Go and Let God!

In my opinion, ‘letting go’ does not mean stopping loving or caring, but giving your child the right to be independent, and always being ready to support them when they need it.

In my view, “letting go” does not imply ceasing to love or care for your child; rather, it means granting them the freedom to be self-sufficient and remaining available to assist them whenever necessary.
