Van Cheney to step down as Reidsville City Attorney as of…

Longtime city attorney Van Cheney will be stepping down from his post in the City of Reidsville at the end of this month, a spokesperson from City Hall confirmed to AllOnGeorgia Thursday.

It was originally believed that Cheney would serve his position through the end of 2016, however, Cheney will serve in his appointed capacity through the end of August and council will decide a permanent replace for the next city attorney  during the September 6 planning session (a Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday) and the September 12 (Monday) council meeting.

Reidsville has been a hotbed for controversy since August 2015 when Cheney sold his law office building to the City of Reidsville under the reign of then-mayor Eddie Rewis. Since then, the council and city attorney have been plagued with criticisms over the refusal to form an ethics committee, unaddressed zoning violations, and various conflicts of interest of Reidsville officials.

Cheney was also the City Attorney for the City of Cobbtown and City of Collins, both in Tattnall County, but resigned his posts there earlier this year.
