Kemp Orders State of Emergency After Violent Protests in Atlanta, Activates National Guard Troops

Governor Brian Kemp on Thursday declared a state of emergency as a result of the January 21 violent protests in downtown Atlanta. The order will expire on February 9 unless renewed by the governor.

According to the order, “That because of unlawful assemblage, violence, over threats of violence, disruption of the peace and tranquility of this state and danger existing to persons and property, a state of emergency is declared in the State of Georgia.”

The order states that the Georgia Department of Defense is to provide up to 1,000 Georgia National Guard troops to be used in response to the state of emergency, and that the troops be called up to state active duty as necessary by the Adjutant General.
