Hogan: Georgians have a long history of fighting for our civil rights

OPINION: “Georgians have a long history of fighting for our civil rights, and we are once again called to continue the work. We will be steadfast, unwavering, and resilient in our pursuit of justice. “

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black lives taken at the hands of police brutality. America is facing a crisis.

The deaths of George, Breonna, and Ahmaud were not isolated incidents. Police violence is a pervasive symptom of the structural racism that plagues our country — one that has brutalized Black communities for centuries.

Black men, women, and children face systemic racism and violence every day. And it is up to all of us to call out injustice whenever and wherever it occurs.

The Democratic Party of Georgia stands in solidarity with protesters in Georgia and across the nation demanding accountability. DPG Chairwoman Nikema Williams issued the following statement addressing the murders of George, Breonna, and Ahmaud, and calling for justice:

“The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others are a painful reminder for Black Americans of the systemic racism that has killed Black Americans for centuries — a system which demands action and outrage.

For far too long, pervasive racism and inequalities in our system have been allowed to go unchecked and unanswered, and it is only when Black Americans make our voices heard that we accomplish any real change. But this responsibility is not only on the protesters in the streets. It is the responsibility of every single American to challenge our leaders for something better, to call out injustice for our fellow man, and to change the system until it truly works for us all.

We demand true justice. We demand lasting, systemic change from our leaders. And we will put our demands to work by electing leaders at every level who will fight for Black lives, and to end the systems that have harmed us for too long.”

Georgians have a long history of fighting for our civil rights, and we are once again called to continue the work. We will be steadfast, unwavering, and resilient in our pursuit of justice.

This moment requires action from us all. And as a white male, I have a responsibility to use my voice in service of equity and justice for those whom justice has been denied for too long.

Our broken system must be addressed, Jessica. My team and I are committed to working with you to elect leaders who will fight for reform and move our state forward.

I’m so proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with you in this work.

Yours in the fight,

Scott Hogan
Executive Director, Democratic Party of Georgia
