The Georgia Southern football squad held its first preseason scrimmage on Saturday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium with both sides of the balls showing positives signs as the second week of practice comes to a conclusion.

“It’s really only practice eight, so there’s still some sloppiness and things that have to get better,” said head coach Chad Lunsford. “On the positive side, we did 90 plays and we got that done in an hour and 15 minutes. I thought the guys did a really good job humming through it and getting after it to try and get the play count in. However, toward the end of it, you started to see guys get tired and that’s when they didn’t get in the right stance, had mental busts or penalties. Again, this is the first time we stressed them with a 90-play scrimmage but I was happy with the way they attacked it. There were a lot of good plays out there, but obviously we have to be better next time.”

With scripted spots put down after every play, statistics were not kept.

However, the scores were as follows:

Khaleb Hood 20-yard TD catch from Justin Tomlin
Amare Jones 15-yard TD catch from Justin Tomlin
J.D. King 2-yard TD run
Jordan Pearson 5-yard TD run
Khaleb Hood 66-yard TD run
Beau Johnson 12-yard TD catch from Justin Tomlin
Jalen White 12-yard TD run
Cam Ransom 5-yard TD run

Tyler Bride had an interception, Justin Birdsong had a fumble recovery and the defense recorded several touch sacks. Many of the scores were in pre-set and short-yardage situations

Following the scrimmage, fans were allowed on the field for autographs and pictures and then the family cook-out was held to give the families and players a chance to spend some time together during a busy preseason.

The team will be back on the field for a Sunday practice before taking Monday off.
