Cooper selected for Governor’s Honor Program

Chattooga High School junior Jorja Cooper has been accepted into the Governor’s Honors Program. Cooper is among a select few candidates from all across the state to be chosen for this program. She will spend four weeks this summer at Berry College studying Agricultural Science and working with other students in the program.

The program was open to Sophomores and Juniors in high school, 1% of which applied. 3,000 people applied to the program. 1,600 were semifinalists and went through the interview process. “I am truly blessed to be given this opportunity and participate in the 2018 Governor’s Honors Program,” Cooper said.

The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a four-week summer residential instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, lifelong learners.

Last summer Cooper spent two days at UGA for an Animal Science in Action Program and also spent a week at UGA for VetCAMP.  There were over 400 applicants and Cooper was one of the 52 that were chosen.

“The Governor’s Honors Program will be an excellent opportunity for me to further my education in agriculture. It is an honor to be among the select few chosen for GHP. My major is Agricultural Science in the program. I would first of all, like to thank God for giving me this amazing opportunity. I would also like to thank my parents and CHS teachers and administrators for helping me achieve my goals in all aspects. Without them, I would not have been able to accomplish what I have over the past few years. The teachers at Chattooga High School have truly been supportive and inspiring. I look forward to not only representing Chattooga High School, but the state of Georgia as well. GHP is definitely a competitive program to apply for. I went through an extensive interview and application at Berry College. The interview consisted of a group activity, essay writing, and one on one interview. The interview was conducted to discuss current agriculture related topics. I was asked to be up to date on Agriculture related problems and issues,” Cooper said.
