Indian Drum Major, Elisabeth Dawson
While the football players often get all the glory, never forget that the soundtrack under every Friday night light is played by dozens of high school “student/musicians” who spent their summer learning, not only to play & memorize every song in the show, but also the increasingly difficult steps to the halftime show. Under the grueling heat and watchful eye of the Band Instructor, the band is honed into… well, a fine-tuned musical instrument. The Drum Major is appointed by the Band Teacher and has the responsibility of leading the band in rehearsals and onto the field. In the brand new band room of the brand new high school of the Chattooga Indians, that coveted position rests on the shoulders of junior, Elisabeth Dawson.
Dawson led her Marching Indians onto the field Friday night for a “scrimmage” of their own. The halftime show served as one of several warm up events for the upcoming season of Marching Band Competitions. With a show based around the tunes of the famed band, Earth Wind & Fire, the Marching Indians demonstrated that their summer of hard work has more than paid off. Band Director, Gene Greer has worked wonders with the Indians and, while small in numbers, they deliver a big sound.

After her performance, Ms. Dawson was interviewed by sideline reporter, Casie Bryant. Dawson was asked which of the band members stood out on Friday night as her MVP and she answered without hesitation, “Seth Atkins… he makes the band, The Band…”
