Chattooga High School has a new face leading the Lady Indians basketball program, though many in the area already know him well. Veteran educator and coach Garrett Brown is making the move from Trion High School to take over as the head girls basketball coach at Chattooga, bringing with him more than two decades of experience, a winning record, and his trademark energy to every game, practice, and pep rally.
Coach Brown’s coaching journey spans 25 years in education, beginning in 2000 at Gordon Central. He spent 8 years there, followed by 4 years at LaFayette, and has spent the rest of his career at Trion. Over the years, he’s coached just about everything—most notably football, where he’s amassed 23 years coaching a variety of positions, including receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, and special teams.
In addition to football, Brown led Trion’s golf program for four years, achieving back-to-back team and individual state championships in 2014-15 and 2015-16. After golf, he served as an assistant girls basketball coach under Justin Gentry for three years before taking over the program as head coach.
In his four seasons at the helm of Trion’s girls basketball team, Brown compiled an impressive 62-37 record, a 62.6% win rate. His teams made three state playoff appearances, with two advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. In 2023-24, Brown led his team to a Region Championship and was named Region Coach of the Year.
Now, Brown is bringing his intensity and passion to Chattooga.
“I’m very excited about this new opportunity,” Brown said. “The four-day school week and getting to teach PE will be wonderful. As for the girls basketball team, what little I’ve got to work with them so far, they’re a good mix of older and younger players with some good skill level. They’re a fun group and have worked hard this summer. I believe it will be a fun and exciting year all around.”
At Chattooga, Brown will also serve as an assistant football coach, reuniting with his brother, Justin, now the offensive coordinator, and longtime coaching partner Roone Gable.
Off the court, Brown has taught high school science for 25 years, covering nearly everything from biology and chemistry to environmental and earth science. His new teaching role in PE and Health is a welcome change as he looks ahead to retirement in a few years.
A family man, Coach Brown married his high school sweetheart, Amanda Peace, in 2000. The couple, together for 30 years, have two children—Dawson, 22, pursuing a career as an electrician, and Anna Grace, 19, entering the pharmacy field.
With deep roots in the area, a proven record of success, and unmatched energy, Coach G’s arrival at Chattooga marks an exciting new chapter for the Lady Indians basketball program and the entire high school campus.
