Sen. Jason Esteves Introduces Legislation on Housing, Education, Campaign Finance

Senator Jason Esteves (D – Atlanta) announced the second half of his 2023 legislative agenda with the recent introduction of three bills focused on education, campaign finance, and housing:

Senate Bill 278 would allow for municipalities and local jurisdictions to maintain a registry of multifamily building owners and investigate or inspect certain residential rental property when there is a reasonable suspicion of a code violation. This bill comes after multiple Atlanta Journal-Constitution investigations into the dangerous rental conditions in the Atlanta metro area.

Senate Bill 276 would abolish leadership committees, which have allowed for the proliferation of unrestricted campaign funds into Georgia’s state elections.

Senate Bill 284 would amend Georgia’s “Quality Basic Education Act” (QBE) so as to add a program for students living in poverty to the table of quality basic education instructional programs with weights and student-teacher ratios.

“Every Georgian has a right to a quality education and safe, affordable housing,” said Sen. Esteves. “Further, every Georgian has a right to know that their public servants are accountable to the people, not unfettered special interests. As with every piece of legislation that I introduce, these bills are intended to increase opportunity and make government work for people.”

Currently serving his first term, Sen. Esteves has introduced eight bills to date. Earlier this week, the Senate unanimously passed SB 199, Sen. Esteves’ bipartisan bill which would give authority for the Department of Administrative Services to offer health savings accounts as a pre-tax deduction for state employees, including teachers.
