Ann R. Purcell, Georgia’s 1st Congressional District representative, was elected vice chairman of the State Transportation Board (STB) of Georgia at its monthly board meeting on Thursday, August 17. Joining her as newly elected leaders are Robert Brown as chairman and Jamie Boswell as secretary. The new positions are effective immediately. Board elections are held annually to ensure all regions of the state are represented at the executive leadership level.
“Transportation is critically important to the citizens of Georgia because it impacts businesses and people’s quality of life,” said Vice Chairman Ann R. Purcell. “As a long-standing member of the State Transportation Board of Georgia, I am very aware of the role transportation infrastructure has on people’s lives and in the position of vice-chair, I will continue to work for a better transportation network in Georgia.”
Vice Chairman Purcell, a former state legislator, resides in Chatham County. She was elected to the board in 2013 and was re-elected to serve her third term in 2022. Purcell was recently named one of the 100 Influential Women in Georgia Engineering by Engineering Georgia magazine and a recipient of the 2023 John Adam Treutlen Award for her lifetime of service to Effingham County. Purcell has previously served as chair, vice chair and secretary.
The 14-member STB determines policy and governs the Georgia Department of Transportation. Each member is elected by a caucus of Georgia General Assembly members from their specific congressional district. Board members serve staggered, five-year terms.
