The Joy of the Journey: New Year, Fresh Start

The Joy of the Journey

New Year, Fresh Start

The dawn of a new year often brings with it a sense of hope, renewal, and the desire to start afresh. This is an opportunity for Christians to refocus their hearts and lives on Christ, the source of all true renewal. As we turn the page to a new year, we are reminded that the fresh start we long for is found not in resolutions or will power but in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

There are not many people who do not long for a fresh start.  Scripture tells us that in Christ, we are made new. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This profound truth reminds us that God does not merely patch up our lives but transforms us entirely. Through Christs work on the cross, we are forgiven, redeemed, and given a fresh start, regardless of what lies in our past.

As we enter this new year, we can leave behind the weight of sin, failure, and regret, trusting in Gods promise of forgiveness.  The Lord tells us toRemember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”. (Isaiah 43:18-19).

A fresh start in the new year also involves reordering our priorities to align with Gods purposes. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” As we plan for the year ahead, we are called to put God at the center of our lives, trusting Him to provide for our needs.

This might mean spending more time in prayer, committing to a daily reading of Scripture, or serving others with the love of Christ. In doing so, we rely on Gods strength rather than our own. Proverbs 3:5-6encourages us: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

The new year is an excellent time to reflect on our thought patterns and attitudes. Paul exhorts us in Romans 12:2: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Renewing our minds involves filling them with Gods truth rather than the lies and distractions of the world. This can be done by meditating on Scripture, engaging in fellowship with other believers, and cultivating a heart of gratitude. Philippians 4:8 reminds us: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the new year, we can draw inspiration from Paul in Philippians 3:13-14: Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”  We must keep our focus on the things of God!

Pauls focus was on his heavenly calling, and we, too,are called to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). No matter what challenges we face, we can move forward with confidence, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.

As we embark on this new year, let us embrace the fresh start that Christ offers. By turning to Him, prioritizing His kingdom, renewing our minds, and pressing on toward our heavenly goal, we can experience true renewal and transformation. Let this year be a time of growing deeper in our relationship with Christ and reflecting His love for the world around us.
