The Joy of the Journey
A New Beginning
Graduation season is here! Across the country, teenagers are preparing to walk across the stage to receive diplomas, marking the completion of their public school education. Graduation is a powerful symbol of accomplishment, growth, and new beginnings. It marks the completion of one season and the beginning of another. For the Christian, graduation is more than an academic achievement; it is also a spiritual picture of how we continually grow and mature in our relationship with Christ.
For many graduates, graduation represents years of hard work, perseverance, and celebration of achievements. However, in the journey of faith, graduation takes on an even deeper meaning as we reflect on our spiritual growth and maturity in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Just as we graduate academically, we are called to graduate spiritually, moving from immaturity to a deeper, more profound understanding and connection with our Savior.
We are all called by the Lord to grow. As Christians, we are not meant to remain stagnant in our faith. The Scripture encourages us to pursue maturity and grow in our relationship with Christ. 2 Peter 3:18 reminds us, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” This is a reminder that growth is both a command and a natural progression. Just like students who seek to learn and grow during their academic years, we, too, must actively deepen our understanding of Jesus.
In Hebrews 5:12-14, the author emphasizes the necessity of moving from basic teachings to a deeper understanding of the Word: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
As we seek to grow, it is essential to recognize that we are not alone in this journey. The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in our spiritual growth. John 14:26 tells us, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” The Holy Spirit guides us, teaches us, and reminds us of God’s truth as we navigate our lives.
In our relationship with Christ, we must be attuned to the Holy Spirit’s leading, allowing Him to shape and mold us into the image of Christ. As we grow more attuned to His voice, we can better understand God’s will for our lives and respond to His call.
A mark of spiritual maturity is the ability to bear fruit. In John 15:5, Jesus declares, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Our growth in Christ should manifest as faith in our daily lives, producing the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23).
As you embark on the next chapter of your lives, may you all remember the call to grow in grace and knowledge. Let this graduation be a reminder that our journey with Christ is ongoing, and each step brings us closer to Him, transforming us into the people He has created us to be. Congratulations to the class of 2026!
