Rome Community Mourns Loss of Officer’s Child After Tragic Accident in Silver Creek

A heartbreaking accident in Silver Creek, Georgia, on Thursday afternoon claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy, the son of a Rome Police Officer. The tragedy occurred around 3:54 p.m. near Timberwood Drive and Ramblewood Drive, where the child was struck by a red Toyota Tacoma. Authorities confirmed the school bus in the area was not involved.

According to Floyd County 911, the initial report came from a school bus driver who witnessed the incident. Emergency responders arrived swiftly and began life-saving efforts, but the child was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm a tragic accident that occurred earlier today, resulting in the death of a juvenile who is the child of one of our officers,” stated the Rome Police Department.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Further details will be shared by the GBI as they become available.

Grief counselors from the Floyd County School System will be available to support students and staff impacted by the tragedy.

“This is an unimaginable loss for one of our own,” said Rome Police Chief Denise Downer-McKinney. “Our department is heartbroken and stands united in grief with the family. We ask the community to lift them up in every possible way during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Rome Police Department also extended thanks to fellow law enforcement, emergency service personnel, and the community for their compassion and support.
