
Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen recently announced that the Tooga Theater has been awarded a $1,000,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
AOG reached out for more details on how the funding will be used and what it means for the community.
AOG: What specific renovations or improvements will the grant fund?
Allen: FOX Theater Grant – Phase 2 which includes the balcony renovation for seating, observation/sound booth and adding an activity area
ARC Grant – Phase 1 to renovate the ticket booth, exterior entrance, interior renovations, stage area and roof repair
AOG: Is there a timeline for when renovations will begin and be completed?
Allen: Phase 2 – 6/30/25 and Phase 1 9/30/27
AOG: Will citizens be able to watch movies at the theater again?
Allen: yes
AOG: Will there be partnerships with local schools or organizations to use the space?
Allen: yes
AOG: Who will be responsible for managing and operating the theater once renovations are complete?
Allen: Currently, the Commissioner’s Office is responsible.
AOG: Will there be job opportunities created as part of this project?
Allen: not at this time
AOG: Will ongoing maintenance and operations require additional taxpayer funding?
Allen: Planning for the Tooga Theater to be self-supported
AOG: How will the county ensure the theater remains financially sustainable after reopening?
Allen: fundraising, rentals, donations, programming
AOG: Will there be public meetings or opportunities for citizens to give input on the plans?
Allen: Previously was a public meeting opportunity by the Historical Society, previous County Manager and LDG Design Management on 7/14/24 for input.
AOG: How will progress updates be communicated to the community?
Allen: County media and local news outlets
