Floyd County Commission Plans to Propose Rollback Millage Rate for 2026

The Floyd County Board of Commissioners plans to lower the county property tax rate from 9.50 mills in 2025 to 9.45 mills in 2026 and will vote on the proposal during a called meeting on August 18. Commissioners will also consider raising the fire services tax rate from 1.65 to 1.875 mills to help fund firefighter pay raises and a new fire station, while the solid waste tax rate would increase only slightly from 0.656 to 0.657 mills.

The Floyd County Board of Commissioners intends to propose a 2026 county government millage rate of 9.45 mills, the calculated rollback rate for the year. The rate is scheduled to be considered for adoption during a specially called meeting on August 18.

The proposed rate represents a reduction from the 2025 county government millage rate of 9.50 mills.

A mill represents $1 in property tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. A rollback rate is calculated to offset changes in the value of existing property within the tax digest.

Floyd County’s tax digest grew less than initially anticipated. Preliminary information indicates that approximately 75% of properties experienced a decrease in assessed value this year.

Because the proposed 9.45-mill rate is lower than the rate used to prepare the County’s 2026 budget, the County will need to make budget reductions to account for the lower anticipated revenue. County officials are reviewing departmental budgets and spending plans to determine where those reductions can be made while continuing to provide essential services.

The Commission will also consider changes to the millage rates supporting fire protection and solid waste services.

The proposed fire services millage rate is 1.875 mills, an increase from the 2025 rate of 1.65 mills. The additional funding would help Floyd County prepare for firefighter salary increases and the future construction and operation of a new fire station.

The proposed solid waste millage rate is 0.657 mills, which is the calculated rollback rate for that service. The rate is 0.001 mill higher than the 2025 solid waste rate of 0.656 mills.
