The Statesboro Fire Department announced today it has been awarded the Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grant, totaling $2,108,938.32, is designated for hiring firefighters. The department says it will be used to hire 12 new firefighters.
“This grant will allow the department to respond to emergencies more efficiently and provide improved outcomes in terms of lives and property saved,” said Statesboro Fire Chief Tim Grams. “Hiring these additional firefighters will ensure that the Statesboro Fire Department continues to deliver the highest quality services to the growing Statesboro and Bulloch County community.”
According to FEMA, the SAFER grants were created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, “front line” firefighters available in their communities. The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments’ abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the National Fire Protection Association,NFPA (NFPA 1710 and/or NFPA 1720).
