Mr. Scott pays tax bill in one dollar bills

From Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton:

In the words borrowed from a good friend and teacher, this is too good not to share.

I just couldn’t figure out where to begin. This gentleman was such an inspiration to me that every time I’ve begun to share his story, I’ve learned another lesson from him.
It is a memory that will linger on my mind as a favorite, my encounter with Mr. Scott- a quiet, calm, humble and cheerful newcomer to our county. When he empties his pockets each day, he saves his one-dollar bills in case of an emergency or unexpected bill. He told me he’s disabled-and you can tell it when he walks. It hurt me to watch such a nice fellow walk like that. But he came to me with questions about his bill and how it all works as he just bought his home this year. Though he has graduated high school, he still struggles with some numbers and words. So we talked it over for awhile until he was satisfied with my explanations. He returned with 677 one-dollar bills- that’s 677 George Washingtons, proud and happy to have paid his bill.
At the beginning of our introduction, I had welcomed him to our community (one of my favorite things to do when I meet a newcomer). “You’ll love it here!” I had exclaimed. I keep chuckling to myself- the funny thing is, I think WE will love HIM here. He even said we could put him in the paper.
