Chattooga Elected Officials Facing Opposition

Across the Chattooga County landscape, the Qualifying deadline for local elections in Summerville, Lyerly, Menlo and Trion ended at 4:30 p.m., Friday August 25, 2017. While some officials will be running unopposed this November, their will be some new names on the ballots. The following is a list of people who have qualified to be on the November 7th ballot.

Summerville 

Mayor Harry Harvey will be challenged by Chris Nixon.

Council Seat #1 incumbent David Ford is being challenged by Michael Mack and Betty Brady.

Council Seat #2 incumbent Buddy Windle is being challenged by Bobby Patterson.

In addition, the Summerville City Council has one more public hearing scheduled to discuss allowing a ballot measure granting stores and restaurants the right to sell alcoholic beverages on Sundays. The hearing is scheduled for 5 pm, September 11th at City Hall. At this meeting, a determination will be made if this measure will be placed on the November ballot.

Trion City Council

Mayor Larry Stansell will be facing a challenge from Tonya Abernathy.

Council Seat #1 incumbent Casey Brown is being challenged by Jeff “Fro” Wilson.

Council Set #2 Becky McWhorter and Council Seat #3 Mickey McGraw are unopposed.

Trion Board of Education

Seat 1 Darriel Broome, Seat 2 Johnny Brimer and Seat 3 Randy Henderson all are running unopposed.

Seat 5, held by Thomas Venn, will be on the November ballot but will be listed as a special election. Qualifying for this seat was not advertised in the newspaper so the qualifying dates were pushed back until September 18th-22nd.

Lyerly 

Three people qualified to run for Mayor: Jim Gilliland, Jim Ferguson and Jimmie Hartline.

Council seat #1: Juanita Baker and Trudy Hartline.

Seat #2: Shirley Davis

Seat #3: Phil Brooks (a two year term)

Menlo

Although the mayor seat and two council seats were open, no one qualified to run against Mayor Theresa Canada, council member Chuck Powell or council member Virginia Welch.
