Winters is Coming: Tax Hike Ahead

Four years ago, then Democrat Sole Commissioner, Jason Winters, raised property taxes by a whopping 20 percent. Although dozens of citizens voiced concern over the tax hike, Winters, as sole commissioner,  had the final say and taxes were raised. While another term has passed for the commissioner, apparently the budget woes for Chattooga County continue.

In spite of the massive tax hike in August 2013, Winters has been unsuccessful in guiding county spending to meet budget expectations. Jail costs and county employee benefits appear to be the primary targets for Winters’ financial shortfalls but his solution has a familiar ring to it… more tax increases. In fact, Winters’ proposed 33 percent property tax hikes will mark the largest in Chattooga history.

In spite of borrowing $4 million dollars (an increase of the original $2.5 million dollar loan) at the beginning of summer, Winters has barely $900,000 remaining.

Chattooga County residents will have three chances to voice their opinions about a property tax increase proposed by Republican Sole Commissioner Winters.

The three public hearings will be held at the Chattooga County Civic Center located at 44 Highway 48 in Summerville. The meeting times and dates are:

  • August 7 at 11 am
  • August 7 at 6 pm
  • August 14 at 2 pm
