Felony Suspect Arrested after Standoff in Statesboro

At approximately 3:00 pm this afternoon, Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at a residence on Hwy 80 W in Statesboro to serve felony warrants to 28 year-old Calvin Dale Duke of Garden City. The warrants were for Aggravated Assault, Battery, and 3rd degree Cruelty to Children, stemming from a domestic dispute incident from September 21, where Duke allegedly choked his girlfriend before fleeing the scene.

When deputies arrived at the residence this afternoon, Duke’s girlfriend indicated that he was inside the home and that there was a hunting rifle inside the home. Based on the warrants and the possibility of Duke being armed, deputies followed procedure, set up a perimeter around the home, and called for additional units.

Additional BCSO deputies, TAC Team members, Portal Police Department officers, Statesboro Police Department officers, Georgia State Patrol troopers, and State Probation Officers arrived on scene to assist.

Although it did not appear to be a threat, William James Middle School officials were notified of the nearby situation.

Soon after a BCSO armored vehicle equipped to stop rifle rounds and loudspeakers used to negotiate arrived, Duke complied and exited the home, unarmed. The rifle was located in the room which he was believed to have been hiding.

Duke was arrested and taken to the Bulloch County Jail on the original charges from the warrants. Other charges from today’s incident are pending.

From BCSO:
BCSO appreciates all the assistance from outside agencies. Training and proper equipment led to the resolution of the standoff with no injuries to anyone, the best outcome possible.
