The Joy of the Journey
Women in the Word
What happens when a woman hears the voice of God, believes His Word, and refuses to allow fear to silence her faith? Lives are transformed, history is changed, and generations are impacted. This past week, our church held its annual women’s conference, and what a powerful weekend it was. I cannot wait to hear the testimonies about what God is doing beyond the days of the conference.
Throughout Scripture, we encounter remarkable women whose faith, courage, and obedience helped shape the course of history. Some stood before kings, others knelt in prayer. Some led nations, while others faithfully served behind the scenes. Yet each reminds us of a powerful truth: God can accomplish extraordinary things through an ordinary life surrendered to Him.
These women were not defined by their circumstances, limitations, or the opinions of others. They were defined by their faith in a God who never fails. Just take a moment and look at a few of these remarkable ladies.
Consider Deborah, a prophetess and judge of Israel. During a season when God’s people desperately needed leadership, Deborah answered His calling with courage and conviction. Judges 4:4–5 describes her leadership, while Judges 5:7 records her declaration that she arose as a mother in Israel. Deborah reminds us that faith requires courage, especially when others are hesitant to act.
Then there was Esther, a young woman who found herself positioned to influence the future of an entire nation. When her people faced destruction, she courageously risked her life to intervene. Mordecai challenged her in Esther 4:14 with the unforgettable words, “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther reminds us that God often places us exactly where we are for purposes greater than ourselves.
Ruth demonstrated another powerful expression of faith through loyalty and commitment. Leaving behind everything familiar, she declared in Ruth 1:16, “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Her faithfulness ultimately placed her in the family lineage of Jesus Christ.
The New Testament continues this remarkable testimony of women whose lives reflected God’s grace.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, demonstrated extraordinary surrender when she responded to God’s calling in Luke 1:38, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Her obedience reminds us that faith often requires trusting God before understanding His plan.
The Samaritan woman encountered Jesus at a well and became a witness to her community. John 4:39 reveals that many believed because of her testimony. Her past did not prevent God from using her future!
Mary Magdalene, delivered from spiritual bondage, became one of the first witnesses of Christ’s resurrection. Her declaration in John 20:18, “I have seen the Lord,” continues echoing through history.
Priscilla helped instruct others in biblical truth (Acts 18:26). Lydia opened her heart and home to the gospel (Acts 16:14–15), while Phoebe faithfully served the church (Romans 16:1–2).
Different women, different backgrounds, different gifts, but one common characteristic: They made themselves available to God.
Today, the Church desperately needs women who will do more than simply profess their faith. We need women who will stand boldly upon the Word of God, pray with conviction, live with integrity, lead with humility, and refuse to compromise biblical truth in a culture that increasingly rejects it. We need women whose influence reaches beyond the walls of the church, whose lives reflect the character of Christ, and whose passion for the lost compels them to share the gospel.
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we were created in Christ Jesus for good works. God has not called us to simply occupy a place in His kingdom, but to make a difference for His kingdom.
The women of Scripture did not change their generation by remaining comfortable, silent, or indifferent. They responded when God called, stood firm when faith was tested, and obeyed when the cost was great.
So here is the challenge: Will you simply admire the faith of these women, or will you demonstrate that same faith in your own generation? Will you stand when others compromise? Will you speak when others remain silent? Will you surrender your plans, your comfort, and your fears to fulfill God’s purpose for your life?
The same God who used Deborah, Esther, Ruth, Mary, and countless others is still calling women today. Our generation does not need more spectators of faith. It needs women who are willing to live it, defend it, and boldly proclaim it!
The question is no longer what God accomplished through the women of yesterday. The question is what will you allow Him to accomplish through you today?
