There are several elements of the movie worth praise, but the practical effects, performance, and score stand out. Real boats were placed at sea, the cyclops was actually a sixty-foot puppet, and forced perspective created the tall giants. Performances by Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon steal the show. You can feel Penelope’s (Anne Hathaway) rage and longing for her long-lost husband, especially in her conversations with Telemachus. Matt Damon effectively portrays Odysseus’ excessive pride and wit. The score is one of a kind, literally. Composer Ludwig Göransson created the soundtrack with only 3,000-year-old instruments, some of which did not exist in the modern world and needed to be reconstructed. The score has a powerful effect on the audience, who may get chills, especially during the Sirens’ song scene and when the drums can literally be felt as tensions rise during the fall of Troy.

Overall, The Odyssey movie is a spectacular interpretation of the ancient classic. If you are looking for an exact adaptation of the epic poem, this might not be the movie for you.
