The Joy of the Journey
Our Freedom is Not Free
As America celebrates her 250th birthday, we gather beneath fireworks, wave the Stars and Stripes, and give thanks for the freedoms we so often take for granted. This historic milestone is more than a birthday celebration; it is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that gave birth to our nation and the God whose providential hand has sustained us for two and a half centuries. Behind every parade, every patriotic song, and every display of red, white, and blue stands an undeniable truth: our freedom came with a price.
From the earliest days of our nation, brave men and women sacrificed their lives, families, fortunes, and futures so that liberty might flourish. The American Revolution was not merely a political movement; it was a costly struggle fought by ordinary people who believed that freedom was worth every sacrifice.
Our nation’s founders frequently turned to prayer and the Bible for wisdom and guidance. While they differed in their individual beliefs, they recognized that a free society required moral people governed by principles greater than themselves. Scripture shaped their understanding of justice, human dignity, and the value of every individual as one created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). They understood that rights ultimately come from the Creator, not from government.
The influence of the Bible was also proclaimed by the great evangelist George Whitefield, whose preaching helped prepare the spiritual climate of colonial America. Whitefield once said, “Jesus Christ came down to save us, not only from the guilt, but also from the power of sin… He came to save us from our sins, to make us free indeed, by giving us a power over those corruptions which otherwise would domineer over us.” (Sermon, The Method of Grace by George Whitefield) His message reminded the colonies that while political liberty is precious, the deepest freedom is found only through faith in Christ. The Great Awakening fostered a renewed dependence upon God and reinforced the biblical values that shaped many of America’s earliest leaders.
The Bible teaches that true freedom is always connected to truth. Jesus declared, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Political liberty is a tremendous blessing, but spiritual freedom is even greater. A nation may be free from tyranny while its people remain enslaved by sin. Christ came to offer the freedom that no earthly government can provide.
The Apostle Paul reminds believers, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). The liberty purchased by Christ came at an unimaginable cost: the shedding of His own blood upon the cross. America’s freedoms were purchased through the sacrifices of soldiers and their families. Our eternal freedom was purchased through the sacrifice of the Savior.
Likewise, Calvary reminds us that our spiritual freedom was born from suffering. Jesus bore our sin, shame, and judgment so that we might experience forgiveness and eternal life. Isaiah prophesied centuries before Christ’s birth, “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities… and with his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
Freedom, whether national or spiritual, should never produce complacency. It should produce gratitude, responsibility, and faithfulness. As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, may we recommit ourselves to the principles that made our nation strong: faith in God, respect for His Word, gratitude for those who sacrificed before us, and a determination to leave a godly legacy for those who follow. We honor those who fought for our country by living as responsible citizens. We honor Christ by living as faithful disciples.
Happy 250th birthday to a Nation born by the grace of God!
