The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is pleased to announce the launch of the Vince Dooley Battlefield Trust Fund Program, a new state-funded grant initiative dedicated to preserving and permanently protecting Georgia’s historic battlefield lands.
Established under Georgia law and administered by DNR, the program provides matching grants to eligible nonprofit organizations and state agencies for the acquisition or permanent protection of qualifying battlefield properties across Georgia. Eligible sites include battlefields identified in national historic preservation reports by the National Park Service and the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission.
The Vince Dooley Battlefield Trust Fund Program will offer annual funding cycles on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available funding. Grant awards may cover up to 50 percent of the appraised value of eligible land acquisitions or permanent conservation easements. Applicants must provide a one-to-one funding match through cash contributions, bargain sales, donated land value, or other eligible sources.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit charitable organizations with a primary focus of acquisition and management of land for historic preservation purposes, as well as state agencies with a mission of preservation, protection, or conservation of natural, historical, or cultural resources. Projects funded through the program must ensure the long-term preservation of battlefield resources through perpetual conservation easements and ongoing stewardship.
Applications must be submitted through DNR’s online grant portal. Program guidance, eligibility requirements, application materials, and the full Program Manual are available at the Georgia DNR Grants Portal: gadnr.org/grants.
