Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen has released a formal statement following Sheriff Mark Schrader’s announcement regarding potential financial misconduct under the county’s previous administration. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has confirmed that there is an active, ongoing investigation related to the matter.
According to Commissioner Allen, the county initiated a financial review on January 2, 2025, by bringing in outside auditors to assess the state of the county’s financial records. That audit uncovered multiple concerning practices and irregularities, prompting the Commissioners’ Office to escalate the findings by getting law enforcement involved.
On February 24, 2025, a list of nine vendors flagged for suspicious activity was turned over to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Schrader later reviewed the documentation, consulted with the county auditor, and determined that some findings could indicate criminal activity. Based on this, the GBI was asked to investigate.
The issues identified by auditors include:
- Payments for services never rendered
- Prepayments made before services were received
- Overpayments exceeding contracted bid amounts
- Failure to follow proper bidding procedures
- Purchases involving potential conflicts of interest
- Lack of proper contractor vetting
- Failure to submit required federal reports
“These findings raise serious concerns about fiscal accountability within our county,” said Commissioner Allen. “The Commissioners’ Office is committed to transparency and holding county operations to the highest standards of financial ethics.”
Commissioner Allen also stated that the investigation remains ongoing and welcomed continued inquiry, reaffirming the county’s dedication to restoring public trust.
The GBI’s confirmation of the investigation further underscores the seriousness of the situation. More information is expected.
