Chattooga County Historical Society to hold picnic meeting at Alpine Church

Local collectors will be on hand at the program with an array of historical objects such as a Presidential Commendation signed by Abraham Lincoln, 200 year old Georgia maps, Cherokee Land Lottery Land deed, vintage medicine bottles from a early Summerville drugstore, old photographs taken by a Trion photographer around 1900, a collection of antique dough bowls, the Lyerly School Bell, Riegeldale nursery birth records, a list of Confederate veterans in the county in 1910 and much more. Preserving artifacts helps us honor our past and tell our story to the future.

The Chattooga County Historical Society will hold its annual picnic meeting at Alpine Community Church at 1:30 this Sunday, October 16th. The church is located at 1115 HW 337, in Menlo. The picnic will be in the fellowship hall across the road from the church. The Historical Society will provide drinks, plates, utensils, and plenty of fried chicken. If you wish you may bring a covered dish.

Following the meal and for those not coming to the meal, the 1853 church building will be the site for the meeting at about 2:15-2:30. A brief program will be presented summarizing the church history and ongoing preservation of its 1800s burial ground.

The Society’s 5th in a series of Christmas ornaments will be introduced and for sale at the meeting as well as our previous four ornaments. This years ornament features the historic Lyerly Dam which celebrates its 100th birthday in 2023. The ornaments are $15.00
