County Pays Tribute to Judge Jon Payne

The new sign went up today on the Judge Jon M. Payne Government Annex Building.

The sign is a tribute to the beloved Probate Judge who passed away one year ago from complications from COVID-19.

Payne served as  the county’s probate judge for 45 years.

In February of 1975 Jon Payne won a special election to fill the office of Probate Judge.  He was 25 years old when he was sworn in. The county loved him so much he kept the job as long as he wanted it.

Magistrate Judge Tracy Maddux wrote a letter to Commissioner Elsberry several months ago and had all the elected officials sign it asking to dedicate the Annex to Judge Payne.

”We have had several discussions during our monthly meetings and had hoped to make it happen quicker but Covid slowed the process. I was in Whitfield County hearing cases this morning when I got the news and I am beyond proud to see it done. Thanks to Commissioner Elsberry and all who worked on the project. Jon was a great friend and leader in our community and this is a fitting way to ensure he is remembered,” Maddux said.
