Day Claims Championship, Leading Team to Second State Title

Trion High School senior Dawson Day is red hot on the fairway. He followed up his signing with Truett McConnell University by winning the Georgia Class A team and individual Low Medalist State Championship. The GHSA Golf Tournament was hosted in Augusta at Goshen Plantation. Day shot a 73, one over par in the championship round, earning him the Individual State Title for having the lowest score among all Class A public competitors.

Day has been playing golf since he was very young, when his Granddad Tony would take him to the course. “My granddad wanted me to play, and it just kind of stuck”, said Day.  He didn’t start playing golf competitively until his sophomore year. Earlier in his high school career he was a standout baseball player, switching over to golf three years ago and immediately had remarkable success in the sport. To get ready to compete, he started taking lessons at the Lafayette Golf Course with Eddie Jackson. He has been working hard and staying on top of his game ever since. When asked how much he practiced to keep a handicap of 2, Day said, “I am always practicing, everyday.”

Day’s round of 73, in which he had four birdies an a very tough par 72 course, led Trion to their second Team State Title. In addition to winning the individual state title this year, Day finished runner up to teammate Ben Huggins last year. This year he didn’t look, back beating his closest competitor by 5 strokes. Goshen Plantation featured all that can be expected for a course in Augusta, narrow fairways and lots of water and sand.

Trion Head Coach, Steve Gladney could not say enough about the person Day is, “he’s just incredible, to come over from baseball and be as successful as he is, it’s truly special.”  As a student athlete Day maintains a 3.3 GPA and is an active member of North Summerville Baptist Church.

Truett Head Coach Patton plans to put Day right to work on the team saying, “he has a good golf game and will most likely start as the one or two man on the team.”

For Day golf is more than just a hobby and he plans on taking his golf game, “as far as it will take me.”
