Georgia Southern to tighten security in student section at football games

Georgia Southern University says it will up its security in the student section this Saturday after allegations from a Savannah State cheerleader at a previous game where she says she was harassed.

Georgia Southern University says it will up its security in the student section this Saturday after allegations from a Savannah State cheerleader at a previous game where she says she was harassed.

GSU will face off against Louisiana-Monroe this week, but fans and faculty are still reeling from a bottle-throwing incident at the season opener two weeks ago.

The Savannah State cheerleader took to her personal Facebook page and said fans in the student section not only yelled racial slurs at her and her teammates, but also threw bottles at one point. The police report indicates that Evan Challenger, a baseball player at the university, is one of the alleged bottle throwers, though the cheerleader said she would not press charges.

Georgia Southern Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein said Monday that the area needs more eyes in the area as a preventative measure and noted that the actions of a few do not represent the sentiment of many.

The university is still working on a formal investigation.
