Chattooga High School Senior Kailen Greer signed today with West Georgia Tech to play softball in the upcoming season. Kailen stepped up this past season to be the leading pitcher for the Lady Indians.
Greer pitched 155.2 innings, struck out 132, walked 54, and gave up 104 hits. Kailen won 18 games and 14 of those wins were shutouts. Kailen had been a starter all 4 years as a Lady Indian. The first three years she mainly played outfield and pitched some, this past year she had to step up and be the lead pitcher and she owned the mound.
Coach Jeff Bennett commented on Kailen’s career saying, “I am very honored to have coached Kailen for the past four years. She was a hard worker and wasn’t afraid to stay after practice or come in on off days to work on hitting or pitching. I never saw her get very nervous, she was always loose, she kept the team loose and especially me on game days. Kailen will do great at West Georgia Tech.”
While most four-year old kids were chasing butterflies, Kailen was playing ball. She started at an early age putting in the extra work required to be her best. She started hitting and fielding lessons with Richie McWhorter when she was six-years old. Greer started playing travel ball about 5 or 6 years ago, it was then that she decided to become a pitcher. She added pitching lessons with Richie and later took pitching lessons from Melissa Wilbanks who was a star pitcher for the University of South Carolina. During middle school she played 1st base because of her height but her favorite place other than the pitchers mound is left field.
Her Dad, Preston was Kailen’s coach from T-ball until her middle school years. He reflected on that time, “As with all athletes, especially girls, Kailen has a bit of an attitude. Some days we did good with it, and some days we didn’t. As her Dad and as her Coach, I LOVED every minute that we got to spend together on the softball field!”
Kailen had a ton of support today at her signing and will have continued support as she chases her dream to the next level.
