Brier Creek Revolutionary War Battlefield Association Formed Locally

Historic Signing of the BCRWBA 501C3 by-laws

The Brier Creek Chapter held its monthly meeting on Thursday night, April 5, 2018 at R & D’s Restaurant at 7:00 and the newly formed Brier Creek Revolutionary War Battlefield Association was presented by Chair Tommy Christopher.

Copies of the by-laws for the BCRWBA were distributed while Chair Tommy Christopher discussed the purpose and mission of the purposed 501(c)3 organization. Officers and Board Members were also named after volunteering to serve.

According to officials, the mission of the Association is “to present and interpret the history, scientific and culture of the area as it is reflected in its heritage of significant Revolutionary Period sites and resources by encouraging the permanent preservation of the site of the Brier Creek Battle, its natural history and related resources.  Through exhibits, educational programs and interpretation, the value of this heritage and its meaning and orientation to present day life will be presented.”

The organization also said, “Programming will create an awareness of the need for the preservation of our past, through relics, personalities and principles, for future generations.”

The following are the officers and members of the board of directors:

  • 1st Vice-President Sonny Pittman
  • 2nd Vice-President Tommy Christopher
  • Secretary State Senator Jesse Stone
  • Treasurer John Fitzner
  • Parliamentarian Homer “Chip” Durden
  • Chairman of the Board of Directors Tommy Christopher,
  • Board members, Grace Waits, Dr. John Derden, Alecia Evans, Wilder Smith, Jr., Scotty Scott, Dianne Fitzner, Dr. Al Freeland, Dess Smith III, Lee Smith, J. Michael Tomme, and Betsy Sternau.

Ex officio members include: the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Historic Sites Division, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Game and Fish Division and Dr. Ryan McNutt, professor at Georgia Southern University.

The articles of incorporation and the by-laws for the 501C3 association have been forwarded for approval and the group hopes to hear back in June. The association will be accepting membership in the BCRWBA sometime in June.
