Kemp Appoints Hines as New DHS Commissioner

Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Gerlda B. Hines to be Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) on Tuesday, effective July 1. Current Commissioner Robyn A. Crittenden was appointed last week to be Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Revenue.

Hines has served as the DHS Chief of Staff since January 2019 and served as Interim Commissioner from November 2018 – January 2019. Previously, Hines served as the agency’s Deputy Commissioner and Chief Financial Officer, managing the Department’s leadership team and overseeing a budget of more than $1.9 billion.

“I have spent the past 17 years in service to the State of Georgia,” Hines said. “I am honored to continue that service by supporting vulnerable children, adults and families so we can make a stronger future for our great state.”

Before coming to DHS in 2015, Hines was the Deputy Chief Financial Officer for the Georgia Department of Community Health, where she was responsible for a $13 billion budget. She also served as the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the Georgia Student Finance Commission, the Budget Manager for the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority and a Policy Analyst for the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning & Budget.

Hines graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant. She is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association, Georgia Fiscal Management Council and Leadership Cobb Alumni Association. Hines lives in Marietta, and has one son.
