Long County deputies on Tuesday arrested Cortez Douglas after he fled a checkpoint and was eventually stopped. A search of his vehicle revealed a small amount of suspected marijuana, a 9mm handgun, and 9mm ammunition. Upon conducting a status check, it was discovered that he was wanted for murder in Sumter County. Douglas is being charged in Long County with multiple traffic violations, along with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently being held in jail awaiting to be turned over to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, June 6th, 2023, at approximately 0118 hours, Sgt. Aaron Combs, Deputy Michael Vining, and Deputy Hunter Breningstall were conducting a safety checkpoint on U.S. Hwy 84 at Morgan Lake Road. A Honda Accord traveling East on U.S. Hwy 84 approached the checkpoint and came to a stop. Deputy Breningstall made contact with the driver, later identified as Cortez Douglas, and requested a driver’s license. Cortez Douglas immediately and rapidly accelerated the vehicle in an attempt to flee from law enforcement.
Long County Deputies then pursued the suspect vehicle on U.S. Hwy 84. Sgt. Combs then attempted to bring the vehicle to a stop by utilizing the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT). Immediately after Sgt. Combs’ patrol vehicle made contact with the fleeing vehicle, Cortez Douglas applied the full braking capabilities of the fleeing vehicle causing all 4 tires to skid. The fleeing vehicle then came to a stop and a felony traffic stop was performed. Cortez Douglas was then taken into custody by Long County Deputies. A search of the suspect vehicle revealed a small amount of suspected marijuana, a 9mm handgun, and 9mm ammunition. All items discovered have been seized and placed into evidence.
Long County Deputies then conducted a status check of Cortez Douglas via GCIC/NCIC. GCIC/NCIC indicated that Cortez Douglas was wanted by the Sumter County Sheriff`s Office for Murder. On May 29, 2023, Cortez Douglas allegedly shot and killed Quan’Tavius Robinson in Sumter County, Georgia. Cortez Douglas has been charged locally with multiple traffic violations along with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Cortez Douglas is currently being held in jail awaiting to be turned over to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
