K.L. Watkins, a professional storyteller who has told stories throughout the United States, has completed her new book “Family of the Heart”: a potent coming-of-age tale of a young woman struggling to find her place in the world. Watkins traveled to Russia with a storytelling delegation through People to People Ambassadors. She has published numerous articles and short stories in professional journals. She retired as a cultural arts director for Parks and Recreation, Gwinnett County, Georgia, where programs included all the arts with a strong writers’ group established in 1989.
“Family of the Heart” tells the story of Katrina, a young woman who is not always sure of herself as she struggles with friendships that are degrading and humiliating. Her life changes when she moves to Sarasota, Florida, where she makes lifetime friends she claims as family. As she grows surer of herself, she discovers a talent as a potter and makes her living as an artist.
Katrina becomes pregnant when she is young and unmarried, deciding to carry the child but then give her up for adoption. She spends the rest of her life struggling with this decision and looking for her firstborn child.
Published by Newman Springs Publishing, Watkins’s tale weaves adventures and characters from an era that faced unique and previously unaccepted challenges, featuring offbeat, unusual, and intriguing characters. Readers will fall in love with the characters through their letters, personal trials, and escapades.
