On January 18, the 2024-25 Wrestling Duals State Championship crowned Social Circle as the Class A state champion. Wrestling remains one of the few sports in Georgia without a split Class A bracket, meaning Social Circle, a Class A Division I school, claimed the top spot by defeating runner-up Toombs County, also a Class A Division I school.
Trion, representing Class A Division II, advanced to the consolation finals after falling to Social Circle in the winner’s bracket. They ultimately finished fourth after a 51-27 loss to Bremen. Despite the setback, Trion was the furthest-advancing Class A Division II school in the duals competition.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Head Coach Randy Steward stated, “We were seeded 4th of 16 teams at the Class A State Duals. We went 3-2 and finished fourth overall. I’m proud of how hard our kids competed and how far we’ve come this season.”
Trion’s dual results showcased their grit and determination:
- Trion 42, Elbert County 28
- Trion 46, Mt. Pisgah 34
- Trion 15, Social Circle 66
- Trion 39, Gordon Lee 34
- Trion 21, Bremen 51
Trion concluded the duals season with a 14-3 overall record and now shifts its focus to the upcoming traditional wrestling tournaments. “We head to Coosa High School on Saturday, February 1, for the Area 7 Class 1A Traditional Tournament,“ said Steward. “The top four wrestlers will advance to sectionals on February 8 at Social Circle, and the top six will move on to the state tournament in Macon on February 13-14.”
Steward expressed his satisfaction with the team’s growth in his first year as coach. “It has been a good first year for me here at Trion. I’m thrilled to be the head coach and have focused on developing relationships with everyone involved in the program. Our immediate goal is to get the kids ready to compete at a high level for the next three weeks,“ he said.
