Emperor City Grappling Club won the Georgia State Jiu-Jitsu Championships by Newbreed Jiu-Jitsu Federation on Saturday, outscoring 47 other teams on their way to the title. The youth team finished 4th, bringing home 18 medals (6 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze) while the adults tallied 28 total medals (12 gold, 9 silver, and 2 Bronze) on their way to the adult championship. Their combined scores gave the club 144 points and the overall team championship, nearly doubling the score (73) of the second-place team, American Top Team – Atlanta, with Ascension  MMA of Alpharetta coming in third.

ECGC owner and head coach PJ Broome led the charge, scoring key points by picking up two wins, including a submission win over Levi Scott of Reno, Nevada, in the black belt absolute division.

“Winning the Overall Team Championship and the Black Belt Absolute bracket in the same day is truly a young PJ’s dream come true.” said Broome.  “I’ve literally fantasized about this day for half my lifetime. I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that it actually happened.”

Emperor City posted 60 entries in the tournament, compiling an overall record of 37-31. Broome stated the importance of the culture and community within the club.

“It’s impossible for me to articulate how much this team means to me.” Broome said. “The kinds of goals I have for myself and ECGC are not the sort that are accomplished on one’s own, and for me to speak my vision and everyone put in the work to make it a reality shows just how close we all are and how much the team means to everyone involved.”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a year-round sport, and the team isn’t slowing down having already set its eyes on new horizons with other tournament dates soon.

Emperor City Grappling Club is located at 934 Spider Webb Drive in Rome. They can be contacted at 706-844-3904 or emperorcitygc@gmail.com
