Chattooga Middle School Claims FCAA Basketball Championship

The Chattooga Middle School Indians are league champions.

The Indians captured the Floyd County Middle School Athletic Association (FCAA) championship with a hard-fought 52-41 victory over Coosa on the Eagles’ home court.

Chattooga finished the season with an impressive 13-1 record. Their only loss came in the final regular season game at Coosa, falling by 10 points to a team they had previously defeated by 20 at home. As the #1 seed in the tournament, the Indians cruised past Armuchee 58-33 in the semifinals before avenging their earlier loss to #3 Coosa in the championship game.

“I am proud of these young men and their efforts to be champions, but I am even more proud of the integrity and respect these young men showed throughout the season,” head coach Wes Maddux said. “I had so many officials, administrators, and fans from other schools compliment their demeanor on the court. They never said a negative word to officials or opposing players no matter the circumstances; they just played basketball.”

Championship Game Recap

The Indians jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead and held a narrow 21-18 advantage at halftime. Coosa caught momentum in the third quarter and briefly took a 29-25 lead before Chattooga charged back with key free throws to grab a 32-30 edge heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Indians’ depth, stamina, and athleticism proved too much for the Eagles. Chattooga outscored Coosa 20-11 in the final frame to seal the championship.

“This was a team win, so many guys contributed offensively and defensively to get the victory,” Maddux said. “They bought into the defensive game plan and took pride in executing it. Free throws were huge for us. In our previous meeting, we shot 38% (8-21), tonight we shot 66% (25-38). Offensively, we wanted to get to the basket and utilize our size. In order to stop us, they had to foul a lot, and we made them pay by knocking down the free throws.”
