A new scholarship aimed at supporting students pursuing skilled trades has been established in memory of a Northwest Georgia student.
The Elijah Espy Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the life of Elijah Espy, a sophomore at Armuchee High School who passed away in October 2025. The scholarship seeks to continue his legacy by helping students follow a similar path into trade careers.
According to the scholarship fund, Elijah had planned to attend a local technical school and pursue welding, reflecting a passion for hands-on work and skilled trades.
Supporting the next generation of tradesmen
The scholarship will award $1,000 to one student and is open to high school seniors in Georgia who plan to attend a trade school after graduation. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA to be eligible.
While students from Armuchee High School are given preference, the opportunity is open to qualifying students across the state.
To apply, students must submit a 400–600 word essay explaining:
- Why they have chosen trade school
- What trade they plan to pursue
- Their goals after completing their program
- How the scholarship will help them achieve those goals
Key dates
The application deadline is April 28, 2026, with the recipient expected to be announced in late May.
Honoring a legacy
The scholarship was created by Elijah’s family as a way to turn loss into opportunity, encouraging students to pursue meaningful, in-demand careers in the trades.
Organizers say the goal is not only to provide financial support, but to highlight the importance of trade careers and the impact they have on communities.
As interest in skilled trades continues to grow, scholarships like this aim to remove financial barriers and help students take the next step toward stable, rewarding careers.
Elijah Espy was a beloved son who was a sophomore in high school when he passed away in a dirt bike accident.
Eli was known for being kind, friendly, and always willing to help. He had good grades and a bright future and was excited to attend technical school to learn welding and pipefitting. Since his passing, loved ones have championed LLE – LiveLikeEli and LoveLikeEli. His family and friends have kept his memory alive in their hearts and minds and have encouraged others to live like him, with compassion, bravery, and passion.
This scholarship aims to honor the life of Elijah by supporting students who are interested in learning a trade and furthering their education.
