The Chattooga County School District announces that the overall literacy rate for the district remained steady from Spring 2023 to Spring 2024. Despite the stability in the overall literacy rate, significant gains were observed in several grade levels, highlighting the district’s commitment to improving student outcomes.

Notable improvements were seen in the 4th, 6th and 8th grades developing learner or above, where the literacy rates increased to 51.5%, 63.4% and 74.4% respectively. While these figuresare slightly below the state’s literacy rates of 68.4%, 68.6%, and 78.6% respectively, they align closely with our RESA district’s average literacy rates (and include retest scores).

“We are incredibly proud of the progress our 4th, 6th, and 8th-grade students have made,” said Robert Beach, Chief Academic Officer of Chattooga County School District. “This improvement reflects the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and staff. It also underscores the effectiveness of our literacy initiatives and the targeted interventions we have put in place over the past year.”

The district’s focus on enhancing literacy skills through various programs and resources has been instrumental in achieving these gains. Initiatives such as literacy interventionists, literacy curriculum supplements, and professional development for teachers on best practices in literacy instruction have all contributed to this positive trend.

“Our goal is to ensure that all students in the Chattooga County School District are equipped with the necessary literacy skills to succeed academically and beyond,” added Mrs. Helie. “While we are pleased with the progress made, we recognize there is still work to be done to meet and exceed the state average. We remain committed to continuous improvement and will continue to implement strategies to support our students’ literacy development.”

The district will continue to monitor literacy rates closely and adjust its instructional strategies as needed to ensure sustained progress across all grade levels. Parents and community members are encouraged to support these efforts by promoting literacy at home and participating in district-led literacy events and programs.
