The Joy of the Journey
He Will Fight for You
Trusting the Lord to fight for us is one of the most powerful and freeing truths in the Christian life. It requires surrender, patience, and deep faith, but it also brings peace that cannot be shaken by circumstances. Throughout Scripture, God reminds His people that the battle is not theirs alone, but His.
One of the clearest declarations of this truth appears in Exodus 14:14: “The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” These words were spoken to the Israelites as they stood trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea. From a human perspective, defeat seemed certain. Yet God was inviting them into a posture of trust—not striving, not panicking, but resting in His power. Their role was not to fight, but to believe.
This same principle applies to us today. Whether we face spiritual battles, emotional struggles, or difficult circumstances, our instinct is often to take control. We try to fix, defend, and force outcomes. But trusting God means stepping back and allowing Him to move on our behalf. It doesn’t mean passivity; it means dependence. Psalm 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Trust shifts our confidence from our own strength to His.
Trusting God to fight for us also requires humility. Pride tells us we must win every battle ourselves, prove our worth, or defend our reputation. But God calls us to release that burden. In Romans 12:19, we are reminded: “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” When we let go of the need for revenge or control, we make room for God’s justice and timing, which are always perfect. This is not easy to do and goes against human nature. However, the peace that comes when we allow God to take care of things cannot be explained.
Another key aspect of this trust is faith in God’s character. We can only trust Him to fight for us if we truly believe He is good, faithful, and sovereign. Deuteronomy 31:6 encourages us: “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” God’s presence is our assurance. We are never alone in the battle.
However, trusting God does not always mean immediate victory or visible results. Sometimes, the battle is prolonged, and God’s work is unseen. In these moments, faith is tested. Isaiah 40:31 offers hope: “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Waiting is not wasted time; it is where God strengthens us and prepares us for what’s ahead.
Jesus Himself modeled this trust perfectly. In the face of betrayal, suffering, and the cross, He did not fight back or call down angels to rescue Him. Instead, He entrusted Himself to the Father. 1 Peter 2:23 says, “When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, butcontinued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.” His victory came not through resistance, but through surrender.
Ultimately, when we trust the Lord to fight for us, we experience a deeper relationship with Him. We learn that His ways are higher, His timing is perfect, and His power is unmatched. The battle may still rage around us, but within us there is a quiet confidence: God is in control, and He is fighting for us.
