The Joy of the Journey
Every Word
In a world driven by materialistic pursuits, it’s easy for us to forget the profound truth imparted by Jesus when He quoted Deuteronomy 8:3: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, ESV). This statement was made during His temptation in the wilderness, showing us the necessity of spiritual nourishment alongside our physical needs. Today, as we navigate a world filled with distractions, we must remind ourselves of the importance of seeking fresh inspiration from God.
Here is the context of Jesus’ statement. When Jesus made this declaration, He was responding to the devil’s challenge to turn stones into bread. In this moment of temptation, He revealed a deep spiritual truth: our sustenance goes beyond physical food; it requires a reliance on the Word of God. This principle laid the foundation for how we ought to live our lives spiritually. Just as our bodies need daily nourishment, so too do our souls need the renewing power of God’s Word.
Most people don’t understand the nourishment that the soul needs. In John 6:35, Jesus further emphasizes this idea by declaring Himself the “bread of life.” He states, “Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” Here, Jesus invites us into a relationship with Him that fulfills our deepest longings. We are not merely creatures of physical desire; we are spiritual beings who need the life–giving words of our Creator. In.
Living by every word from God implies an active engagement with Scripture. It means that we do not merely read the Bible as a historical text or a set of guidelines but approach it as a dynamic source of life, revelation, and inspiration. It is the living Word of God! The writer of Hebrews reminds us that “the word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). It penetrates our hearts, challenges our thoughts and motivations, and transforms us from the inside out.
Through the word of God, we can seek fresh inspiration for our souls and our lives. So how do we live out this principle of depending on God’s Word in our daily lives? The first step is cultivating a consistent habit of prayer and reading Scripture. In Psalm 119:105, we find the proclamation: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” When we immerse ourselves in the Word, we are illuminated with insight, encouragement, and guidance for our lives.
In addition to reading and meditation, we need to be open to what God is speaking to us in the present moment. God’s Word is ever-relevant, capable of addressing our current challenges and circumstances. We must be attuned to the leading of the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth (John 16:13). This is where fresh inspiration arises: it is through a living relationship with the Lord, where His voice speaks to our hearts on a dailybasis. I was listening to a minister not long ago, who was sharing online, and he said that someone walked up to him and said, “I want to hear God speak.” He told them to read their Bible. They persisted. They wanted to hear God speak out loud! He replied, “Then read your Bible out loud.” God’s word is God speaking to us.
Living in the current fresh inspiration from God also involves community. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together.” When we gather with other believers, we share insights, bear one another’s burdens, and remind each other of God’s promises. These communal interactions often serve as vessels of inspiration from God, reinforcing our reliance on His Word.
The words of Jesus remind us of our holistic need for both physical sustenance and spiritual nourishment. As we embrace the truth that we cannot live by bread alone, we should actively seek every word that comes from the mouth of God.
As we press into God’s Word, may we find the inspiration necessary to face each day with hope, purpose, and the assurance that our lives are anchored in His eternal promises. Let us live fully, nourished by His presence, as we experience the fresh inspiration of God today and every day.
