The Joy of the Journey
Endurance
The Christian life is often described as a race, a journey, or a battle. None of these images promises ease and comfort. Instead, they remind us that our walk with Christ requires perseverance, courage, and daily dependence on God’s strength. Jesus Himself warned His disciples, “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved”Matthew 10:22. Endurance is not optional for a believer. It takes determination and strength to make it on this journey to heaven.
Trials are a part of life, and God uses this as a refining process. James writes, In James 1:2–3 it tells us to ‘Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” It is in these difficult seasons that endurance is developed. We may not rejoice in the pain itself, but we can rejoice in what God is producing through it. It creates a deeper trust in Him and a maturity that cannot be gained in comfort.
The Apostle Paul tells us this in Romans 5:3–4, reminding us that “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” This hope is not wishful thinking, but a confident expectation grounded in God’s Word. Endurance grows as we learn to see trials not as obstacles, but as tools in God’s hands, shaping us for His purposes.
Endurance is not about mustering up our strength. We are told in Ephesians 6:10, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might”. Our strength to overcome comes from Christ, not from human willpower. When we feel weary, remember King David’s cry in Psalm 73:26, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever”.
God also provides the power to sustain us through His Word and prayer. Scripture fuels endurance by reminding us of God’s faithfulness and the hope set before us. As Paul writes in Romans 15:4, “Through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Time spent in prayer draws us close to the One who renews our strength.
Last of all, keep your eyes on the prize. Hebrews 12:1–2 paints a clear picture of endurance: “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.” Jesus endured the cross because He kept His eyes fixed on the joy that lay ahead. The redemption of His people and the glory of the Father.
Likewise, we endure by keeping our eyes fixed on the eternal prize. Paul declares in Philippians 3:14, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”. This determination to keep looking forward must be our mindset. This is how we keep from being consumed by the trials we face.
Enduring to the end is not about perfection. It’s about persistence, fueled by God’s Spirit, grounded in His promises, and pressing toward His glory. When we stumble, we get back up. When we grow weary, we draw from His strength. Last of all, when the finish line comes into sight, we will discover that every step was worth it.
