After Beating Cancer, Summerville Teen’s Selfless Wish Inspires Support Across the Country

He fought cancer.
Then he used his wish to help others.
Now his community — and people across the country — are making sure he gets a wish of his own.

After months of fighting cancer, 14-year-old Jude Baker could have wished for anything.

Instead, the Summerville teen chose to help others.

Jude used his Make-A-Wish to provide backpacks, supplies, sleeping bags, and hot meals for people experiencing homelessness — an act of generosity that has since inspired a wave of support from people across Georgia and across the country.

Jude was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma at just 12 years old. The rare and aggressive cancer led to months of difficult treatments, hospital visits, and uncertainty for Jude and his family. When he finally rang the bell marking the end of chemotherapy, many kids might have dreamed of a vacation or a special experience just for themselves.

But Jude’s heart was focused elsewhere.

During his time in treatment, he became aware of people experiencing homelessness in his community and near the hospital. Even while enduring what he described as his own “version of heck,” Jude never forgot about them.

When the Make-A-Wish Georgia asked what he wanted for his wish, Jude chose to give back.

His wish turned into a day of generosity that helped more than 300 people in need. Backpacks filled with essential supplies, sleeping bags for those without shelter, and warm meals were distributed. Those who were there say Jude made sure everyone else had been served before he ate himself.

The powerful story quickly captured attention beyond Northwest Georgia, spreading widely and drawing interest from media outlets across the state and nation, including coverage from People Magazine.

Now that Jude is in remission, the community that watched his selflessness is stepping forward to give something back to him.

Kevin, owner of Godfrey’s Tree Service organized a GoFundMe campaign to help give Jude and his family the chance to enjoy something they have waited years for — an adventure together away from hospitals, treatments, and worry.

What started as a local effort has grown into an overwhelming show of support. Donations have poured in from people inspired by Jude’s story, raising more than $43,000 so far.

The fundraiser, titled “Giving Back to Jude: An Adventure for His Kindness,” aims to help the Baker family create joyful memories together after such a difficult journey.

Despite the attention and generosity coming his way, Jude’s message remains simple.

“It doesn’t have to come from a wish,” he said. “You can help too.”

And now, thanks to a community moved by his compassion, Jude is experiencing that same kindness returned to him in a powerful way.
