Chattooga High School Alumni Jessica Brown has been working hard to promote the newly built pickleball courts beside the Summerville Recreation Department. When asked about the goal of these courts, she said, “My goal is to create a welcoming environment where people can come together, play pickleball, and have fun! I want to introduce more people to the sport so families can enjoy it together, regardless of age. Pickleball is unique because it’s a game that everyone can participate in, whether young or old, competitive or just looking to have a good time.”
Do you or your family want to learn pickleball but don’t know where to start? Well, you are in luck! Jessica Brown also plans to host pickleball camps, with dates to come soon, and private lessons for anyone who prefers more personalized instruction.
Another benefit of pickleball is that a “team” isn’t required. To play pickleball, you only need to play it yourself or a partner. While this sport isn’t traditionally played with a team, Brown is looking forward to the possibility of forming teams within the community for some friendly competition and maybe even tournaments! While pickleball is so much fun because of its competitiveness, Brown expresses that that’s not the only reason she wants the courts to be successful. “Summerville is my hometown, where my parents are also from. They play pickleball, and I know many others here who have to drive to other places to enjoy the sport. The Summerville Rec has fantastic courts, and I thought, why not make use of them? That’s why I decided to bring pickleball to our community. I really hope people will come to love it just as much as I do!”
Although the courts are officially open to the public now, there will be a grand opening soon, so stay tuned for details. While the Rec offers support, Jesscia Brown will handle much of the organizing and planning. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jessica Brown directly or the Rec—they’ll also be informed about events!
