Chattooga County Democrats to Host 5th Annual Black History Month Celebration Feb. 28
For the fifth consecutive year, the Chattooga County Democratic Party will host its annual Black History Month celebration on Saturday, February 28 at 7 p.m. The event, titled “Celebrating Our Heritage Through Poem and Song,” will be held at the Chattooga County Civic Center in Summerville.
The evening will feature local performers presenting songs, dance, and spoken word tributes honoring Black history and culture. Organizers say the program is designed to celebrate both heritage and the contributions of community members.
During the event, several individuals will be recognized for their impact:
-
Harry Harvey will receive the Community Service Award for his years of service as Mayor of Summerville, as well as his work as a teacher and principal.
-
Melvin Mosley, a local minister, retired educator, and chaplain for the local court system, will be honored with the Community Spirit Award.
-
Self-taught painter Billy Smith will receive the Community Artist Award for his artwork, including the oversized Coca-Cola bottle displays and portraits that add character to downtown Summerville.
Community members interested in performing at the event may contact Pam Albert at (706) 859-8044 for participation details.
Refreshments will be provided, admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. Organizers encourage residents to join them for an evening celebrating history, culture, and community achievement.
