To prepare your home for a deep freeze, focus on insulating exposed pipes, checking your heating system, cleaning gutters, keeping your water shut-off accessible, and allowing faucets to drip slightly to prevent pipes from freezing; additionally, stock up on necessary supplies in case of power outages and check your home insulation for any gaps.
Key steps to take:
Insulate pipes: Identify exposed pipes in areas like basements and crawl spaces, and wrap them with pipe insulation to prevent freezing.
Check heating system: Have your furnace serviced and ensure it is functioning properly.
Clean gutters: Clear debris from your gutters to avoid ice buildup on your roof.
Access water shut-off: Locate and familiarize yourself with your main water shut-off valve.
Let faucets drip: When temperatures drop significantly, allow a slow drip from faucets, especially those located near exposed pipes.
Open cabinet doors: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air from the house to circulate around pipes.
Check insulation: Inspect your home’s insulation levels, particularly in attics and crawl spaces, and add more if needed.
Seal drafts: Seal any cracks or gaps around windows and doors to prevent cold air from entering.
Stock up on supplies: Gather non-perishable food, water, batteries, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio in case of power outages.
Protect outdoor faucets: Turn off outdoor faucets and disconnect hoses to prevent freezing
