Chattooga County residents are encouraged to attend a public meeting on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM, where Sole Commissioner Andy Allen will consider approving two major tax initiatives.
Meeting Overview
The meeting, held at the Commissioner’s office at 10102 Commerce Street in Summerville, will focus on the approval of intergovernmental agreements and the formal call for election regarding the Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) and the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST).
FLOST must be used to roll back property taxes for the county portion beginning in 2027.
The purpose of these taxes is to generate revenue for essential county services and long-term transportation improvements. If approved, voters will ultimately decide whether to implement or renew these local sales taxes.

Phil Sutton of Rochester | DCCM is scheduled to present an overview of both the FLOST and TSPLOST measures, including projected impacts and potential uses of the funds generated. His presentation will provide the public and officials with crucial insights ahead of the vote.

Not even sure what TWO new taxes will do for our citizens. I know that they will be discussed and explained at the meeting but, since our property taxes have increased so much I cannot vote for new taxes, especially two taxes that will be taken every time we spend a dollar.

As I understand, the FLOST measure is designed to raise funds that will ease the tax burden on property owners. It is predicted that the fair tax on consumption will lower the millage rate by 50%.
Of course, this will only work if the school board, Commissioner, and BOE agree to lower the millage rate based on the current budget, and refrain from inflating said budgets because of the increased revenue.
Also, I don’t understand why our tax assessors office decided to opt out of the homestead tax exemption that Chattooga voters approved by a 73% yes vote on 5 Nov 2024.
Lastly, I believe the concept of Ad Valorem tax has been misconstrued by our government as an annual taxation on the value of real property, instead of a tax at the point of sale as intended.
