The Chattooga County Board Of Education is proposing to cut the millage rate to

12.595, according to Superintendent Jared Hosmer, “this is the Roll Back Rate from the Tax Assessors office.”

Hosmer said as of now the budget was not balanced, “the budget is at the same point it was at the July meeting.”

The budget for the current school year remains with a deficit in the amount of $494,066.47. “This money will come from our Fund Equity if necessary,” said Hosmer.

The reduction would decrease the millage rate by .088-mills.

The proposed millage rate is expected to generate $4,573,276 for the schools. That’s $34,911 more than last year.

“The current tentative budget shows estimated property taxes at 4.4. With the tax assessor’s information and rollback rate, if collections come in at 100%, we could gain $173,276. Therefore we could not see reason to increase the rate at this point,” Hosmer said.
Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton told AllOnGeorgia she expected to collect 97% after factoring in bankruptcies and the ones she will have to collect with tax sales. “With the rollback rate, most taxpayers will see their bill remain about the same as last year, but some will see some increases in their bills,” Hampton said.

Hosmer said it was his suggestion to cut the millage rate, “after looking at all available information and the plan put before the board, we believe this is the best scenario. If necessary the shortfall will come from fund equity.”

The Chattooga County School Board of Education will hold two public meetings in order to provide the opportunity for public input on its tentative annual operating budget. The first will be on 8/19/2019 at 6:00 pm and the second will be on 8/22/2019 at 6:00 pm before the adoption at 7:00 pm.

These meetings will be held at the Chattooga County Education Center located at 206 Penn Street Summerville GA 30747.
